E. C hurch I B ethany) What Other Editors Say • CHURCHES Public Forum Building Benefits Hillsboro’s record building year keeps apace and from all indications it will be even greater next year. Shortage of homes has been apparent here for years and the construction is not coming any too soon. People working here have had to find homes elsewhere and live at a distance. House construction means much in the route to better times as money goes to the material dealers in many lines and to workmen in different trades. Under pres ent financial plans for home building the person with a regular income was never in a better position to secure that dream of all families—a home of its own. Provisions Discriminatory Objective of the social security act is lauda' le and should reflect in great bene fit to the country and its people, but the provision wherein one tax starts with em ployer of eight is most discriminatory. There is no more reason why the employ er of ight or more should be taxed than the person who employs seven or less. A continuation of this provision of the law will doubtless result in decreasing employ ment where firms are near the borderline. A Fine Record Washington Savings & Loan associa tion, a local institution organized in 1923 under the direction of J. M. Person, has had an enviable record in the maintenance of dividends to its stockholders. It has regularly declared semi-annual dividends in spite of decreased business conditions and in the one recently declared the rate was increased. Such a record indicates good management. Congratulations to Francis M. Wads worth of North Plains who last week cele brated his one-hundredth birthday anni versary. One of the first volunteers in the Civil w ar on the side of the north, Mr. W adsworth has seen much of life and throughout his many years has been keen ly alive to his duties of citizenship. We wish him more happy years. A Los Angeles man walks across tight wire hundreds of feet above a Los Angeles street. Boy, oh boy, the picture of it is enough to make one dizzy. It still seems to hold true th a t one is born every min ute. Public ownership and operation has proven in most cases to be less efficient and more costly.
